Milwaukee – A volunteer committee of friends and fans announces an upcoming fundraising event for acclaimed local musician, bassist Gary Christensen.

The event, to be held Sunday, March 24th, from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. at the 449th Legion Post on 124th St. in Brookfield, features a jazz and big band line-up including some of the area’s most popular performers in those genres.

Christensen, best known as bandleader of the WAMI-Award-winning All Star SuperBand, recently experienced a medical crisis, resulting in a 4 weeks stay in a Madison hospital, most of it in the intensive care unit. Resulting hospital bills, and after-care treatment expenses, have meant huge costs to Christensen, who, like many musicians, has no medical insurance.

All funds raised at the benefit will go directly to Christensen who states he is “extremely grateful for any and all assistance” to help defray the costs of his life-saving treatments.

Slated to appear are Ray Tabs, Lem Banks, Warren Weigratz and VIVO, Deirdre Fellner, Adekola Adedapo, Annie Denison, Pete Sorce, Jackson Dordel, and Sherwood Alper. The final set will feature music by the 16-piece SuperBand, directed by Guy  Kammerer. Christensen will attend the event in its entirety.

There will be other guest performers TBA. High end raffle items, including gift certificates, will be on display with raffle tickets available throughout the event. Attendees may purchase food and desserts; the post’s bar will be open.

Gary Christensen founded the SuperBand in 2000, billing it as an All Star line-up of some of the area’s top jazz and big band musicians. The SuperBand has performed every Thursday since 2000, except Thanksgiving, at several area venues, most recently at O’Donoghue’s Irish Pub in Elm Grove. Christensen has always adhered to a policy of giving back to the community and all proceeds from every performance have been donated to area charities; the recipient for the last several years has been Easter Seals of Southeast Wisconsin.

The door admission is $10. There is plenty of free parking available.
