Nomination Ballot Voting Rules:

Valid ballot submissions must contain the following:

  • A vote in each of the 6 Major Categories (Section I).
  • A vote in 4 of the 17 Genre Categories. (Section II).
  • A vote in 1 of the Instrument Categories. (Section III).
  • A vote in 1 of the Industry Categories (Section IV).
  • The second choice in each Category is optional and should be different from your first choice. However, remember that a substantial number of similar second choices may result in a new Category winner.

(Summarily, ballots will have a minimum of 12 total votes.)

(Rev 20130106 Exec.)

Conditions of Eligibility for Nomination and Terminology:

  1. A “Wisconsin Artist/Group” is defined as having a residence in the State of Wisconsin for at least half of the prior year.
  2. An “Album” is defined as a collection of 6 or more songs released together, under a title, during the prior year in either digital or hard-copy format.
  3. A “Song” is defined as a musical number with a specific song title released during the prior year in either digital or hard-copy format.
  4. “Genres” are somewhat-subjective terms. Artists/Bands are categorized by those who nominate them using the predefined available categories and will be entered as such except in cases where it is clear to the Board of Directors that an artist is miss-cast in a genre (example, a Jazz artist nominated to the Rock category).  In such a case, we will research the act to determine closest fit.

Please Note — WAMI evaluates genre categories every year for opportunities to isolate or merge.  Merging genres is not always a neat fit, or entirely comfortable with the artists themselves, but it is necessary in order to keep the amount of categories manageable.  Increasingly, the Music Industry adds genres, sub-genres, and hybrid-genres.  In effect, the process is increasingly complex.  We analyze WAMI Member Voting to determine interests and trends; therefore categories are a direct reflection of voter choices.  However, WAMI will take recommendations from artists about the fit of any merging that is done, and it will be analyzed and changed if it is deemed the merge was too unwieldy or unfair (this can only be done after votes come in, and comments, and we look at the returns and numbers).  All recommendations will receive due diligence as nothing is more important to this organization than the voice of the Artist.

Several Industry Categories have been moved to the 2013 WAMI People’s Choice Awards.

  • Bluegrass is voted for, this year, in the Bluegrass / Americana Category
  • Techno / Electronica are voted for, this year, in the Club DJ / Dance / Electronic Category

Q: I have a question about the WAMI voting process. Some categories I truly have no idea about who to even pick from as I do not have knowledge of them. What would you like done there as I see it is required to cast a vote in each category? Do I just say I do not know? or NA? Or do you have a list to review and pick from? (Re-posted with permission.)

A: Thanks for your question. It addresses an issue, which although defined in the rules, seems to get ignored too often.

Every year, the WAMI Executive Committee and Board of Directors reviews the WAMI Awards voting process. This year in addition to putting ballots online, we’ve made some adjustments to the Categories. The basic rules have remained unchanged. The rules are designed so that the Awards recognize deserving musicians and their works produced in the State of Wisconsin during the previous year.

We understand that many Members may not be familiar with musicians that fall into every category, but the 6 Major Categories, and minimal voting in other categories are required for a reason. We would hope that WAMI Members will take the time to recognize their fellow hard-working singers, instrumentalists, bands, producers, media, etc. If not PLEASE take the time to do a bit of research. If you are unfamiliar with a Wisconsin musician fitting a particular category, ask around. You’ll often be surprised at the great talent around Wisconsin. Then help spread the word by nominating them. WAMI as an organization does not have a list of artists to review and pick from.

The Rules clearly state that incomplete ballots may be rejected. We hope that all of our Members who have the opportunity to vote will fill in their online ballots as completely as possible and expand their knowledge of the music and efforts put forth by fellow working Wisconsin musicians.

Good luck in the voting process!

If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

      Regards,
      The WAMI Awards Show Committee

If we registered as a 3 piece band to we need to establish one concensus vote for the whole band or does each member get to cast their own vote. Logically i would assume since we pay a significantly higher membership rate versus individual that each member would be able to cast their own vote. Please clarify

    Thanks,

    Mike

      Hi Mike,

Each Member is allowed one ballot. Please note that each Member must submit unique information when they register or renew their membership. Please visit the 2012 WAMI BAND/BUSINESS MEMBERSHIP ADD SINGLE MEMBERS FORM at http://wamimusic.com/join/join-wami-2/add-band-business-members/. Also carefully read the instructions. The person in charge of purchasing your membership will have a receipt containing information you need to log in.

If you are a new member, you will be asked to enter some basic contact information including a unique email address. You will need this and your WAMI Member ID Number which is found on the WAMI Membership Card which should have been/will be mailed to you within a few weeks of signing up. If you need your Member ID right away, please contact membership@wamimusic.com and your ID Number will be sent to you.

If you are renewing your Membership, and it has already been purchased as part of a Band Membership Renewal, get the information described above from the Band Member who renewed, and only enter contact information if it has changed. Your email address to vote will be the one WAMI has on record and your Membership ID is on your card.

Thanks for your question, and I hope this clarifies the issue.

      Regards,

      Steve Tomczyk
      WAMI Director of Online Communications
